Linking the European Family - I, you, we

The project Linking the European Family – I, you, we was developed in partnership with Cardiff Council UK, East Antrim Institute, Belfast North Ireland, Ies Laxeiro, Ponteverda Spain.

Donor: Socrates National Agency (www.anpcdefp.ro/), Grundtvig programme

Duration: 2003 - 2005

Target groups: adults in disadvantaged communities: educators and parents, whose joint efforts will focus on the enhancement of their children’s/students’ educational success

Aim and objectives:
To provide adults in disadvantaged communities in the partner countries with the opportunity to work with educators to improve their contribution to the enhancement of their children’s/students’ school success. The value of this project lies in transferring local traditions to a European learning context. The learners and educators will meet, communicate via email, produce materials that they will share with each other, and become acquainted with each others’ culture.
Objectives:
  • To organize, carry out, monitor, and evaluate activities of in-service training for those involved in the delivery of family learning
  • To collaborate with partner institutions and organizations involved in teacher training for the new Core Curriculum, including issues of family literacy and family learning
  • To improve communication and discussion among adult educators, particularly in the area of family literacy and family learning
  • To organize professional activities: meetings, round table discussions, symposiums, etc. to share information about the latest discoveries in the field of educational services
  • To create new teaching and learning materials in the area of family learning and trial these with a variety of families from various socio-economic groups
  • To place an emphasis on interactive learning and cooperative learning – develop the ICT skills of the educators and the target groups
  • To evaluate the activities of the other partner countries, with a view to developing and promoting best practice
  • To provide a forum for the exchange of ideas and practices which benefit the learners and those who are engaged in family learning activities.
Types of activities: developing learning programmes and materials to be used in community learning, particularly in family learning within disadvantaged communities, trainings (parents and teachers)

Deliverables/ outcomes: increased motivation for lifelong learning, establishing a learners’ partnership with a twofold impact: teachers and parents work together; some disadvantaged families of the participating countries will cooperate; the project’s website www.european-family.ro.

Added value: As the involved countries lie in different parts of Europe with a diverse cultural - historical background, sharing specific elements of each will contribute to better knowledge and awareness of the specificity and of common elements of learning environments in the European community.
